Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is an organosulfur compound with the formula (CH3)2SO. This colorless liquid is an important polar
aprotic solvent that dissolves both polar and nonpolar compounds and is miscible in a wide range of organic solvents as well as water. It has a relatively high boiling point. DMSO has the unusual property that many individuals perceive a garlic-like taste in the mouth after DMSO makes contact with their skin.In terms of chemical structure, the molecule has idealized Cs symmetry. It has a trigonal pyramidal molecular geometry consistent with other three-coordinate S(IV) compounds, with a nonbonded electron pair on the approximately tetrahedral sulfur atom.

APPLICATION

1. Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is a chemical. It is available as a dietary supplement. It can be taken by mouth, applied to the skin (used topically).
   2. DMSO is used for bladderinflammation (interstitial cystitis), limb pain that usually occurs after an injury (complex regional pain syndrome), and leakage of intravenous (IV) from the vein into surrounding skin and tissue (extravasation).
   3. Used for aromatic extraction, resin and dye reaction medium, acrylic polymerization, wire drawing solvent, etc.
   4. Can be used as organic solvent, reaction medium and organic synthesis intermediates. Extremely versatile.
   5. Used as an analytical reagent and a stationary solution for gas chromatography, also used as a solvent in ultraviolet spectrum analysis.
   6. Use for antifreezing agent.
   DMSO is also a osmotic protective agent that can reduce the freezing point of cells, reduce the formation of ice crystals, the damage of free radicals to cells, and change the permeability of biofilms to electrolytes, poisons and metabolites..
